Botanical Description
Of the many genera of Compositae endemic to southern Africa none is perhaps more puzzling to the taxonomist than Gazania. When the third volume of the Flora Capensis was published in 1864-5 no less than twenty-four species were already known, although some of them very imperfectly. Since then our knowledge of the genus has not increased very much, only three or four new species having been added; so that many of the problems which confronted Harvey are still with us to-day. There is, therefore, a great need for field and experimental work with this and with other genera of this family such as Arctotis and Venidium, which would undoubtedly yield results of both botanical and horticultural.
