Botanical Description
The Genus Iris, 54 (1913) pro parte, non Poir. I. stylosa Mazziari in Antologia Ionia, II. 456 (1834); Weiss in Verhl. Zool. Bot. Ges. Wien, XIX. 754 (1869) non Desf. The material from which the present plate was made was supplied by G. P. Baker, Esq. of "Hillside," Oakhill Road, Sevenoaks, Kent, from plants collected by him in Crete. Mr. Baker informs us that wherever he came across this Iris in Crete it was invariably amongst stones or on banks except once when it was under trees in a forest. Mr. S. C. Atchley (in Herb. Kew) notes that in Crete "it is found in ex- posed positions from nearly sea level to 3,000 ft. and above." Botanically, the interest of this plant lies in its relationship with I. unguicularis Poir. Dykes (l.c.) reduced it to this species and there can be no doubt of its close morphological resemblance to this north-west African plant. On the other hand all the Cretan specimens at Kew are clearly distin- guishable from those from north-west Africa and the ones.
