Botanical Description

Sequently confirmed when the plant was named. In the wild state, according to Capt. Kingdon Ward, the plant grows "more or less socially" and may reach a height of 2 metres. The fruiting calyces, as shown on the plate, form an attractive feature in autumn. Dried specimens in the herbarium smell more strongly of oil of wintergreen than any other Gaultheria we know. DESCRIPTION. An evergreen shrub, according to F. K. Ward 1-2 metres high; branches of the current year light green or bright reddish-brown, densely covered with long light brown hairs; older branches darker and their hairs becoming blackish or eventually more or less breaking off. Vegetative bud-scales brownish, persistent, rather tough, thinly leathery, lanceolate-oblong from a wide base, acute, densely and appressedly hairy, up to 8 mm. by 4.5 mm. Leaves nearly sessile, persisting into the second year; those of the new shoots with blades lanceolate to elliptic from a broad rounded base and tapering to the acute or shortly acuminate apex which ends in a more or less prominent hydathode,.
