Botanical Description
This is one of the several plants known in Chile under the name 66 Luma," and was first described by Barn oud in C. Gay's Historia de Chile in 1846. Barn oud stated that this plant was the true "Luma," and that it was no doubt the one which Molina wished to describe when he gave the name Myrtus Luma to a Chilean plant in his Saggio sulla Storia Naturale del Chili" (1782): Barn oud accordingly used Molina's name for this plant. Berg, however, in his revision of the American Myrtaceae (1.c.), did not accept our plant as being the same as Molina's, and whilst he transferred the latter to Eugenia as E. Luma, he retained our plant in Myrtus under the name Myrtus Luma Barn. non Molina. In this he has been followed by later writers, and consequently when the material collected by H. F. Comber under his no. 1038 was identified, the name Myrtus Luma Barn. was applied to it. This name, however, is a later homonym of the earlier Myrtus Luma Molina, and therefore cannot be used for our plant. In 1852 Miquel (1.c.) described a new species of Myrcia, M. Lechleriana, which was subsequently shown to be identical.
