Botanical Description
Plants are examined. When in flower A. Roxburghii may be distinguished easily from all other species. Most of these have the spur of the lip more or less parallel to the ovary, and the lamina conse- quently either pendulous or sloping downwards. In A. Roxburghii, on the other hand, the spur diverges from the ovary at an angle of at least 90 degrees and the lip is tilted upwards to give the flower a very characteristic appearance. Else- where this feature occurs only in A. brevilabris Lindl., but that species has different foliage and the lip is furnished with a much shorter claw which bears merely a few short blunt teeth on each side instead of the long cilia which are so striking a feature of A. Roxburghii. size. Our species was first discovered over a hundred years ago.
