Notospartium glabrescens
Family: genera of Papilionaceae • Native Region: New Zealand • Publication Date: January 1st, 1934
Distribution: --New Zealand; South Island, Marlborough • Tab Author: B. L. BURTT
Botanical Description
Zealand plants belong to quite a different tribe of the Papilionaceae. Notospartium glabrescens is the fourth species of this group to be figured in the magazine, those already illustrated being N. Carmichaeliae (t. 6741), Carmichaelia australis (t. 8972) and C. odorata (t. 9479). The two other genera are Corallo- spartium, whose single species is easily recognized by its yellowish, thick-ribbed stems, and Chordospartium. The latter and some species of Carmichaelia closely resemble Notospartium in general facies, but are easily distinguished by their short 1-2-seeded pods, those of Carmichaelia being further characterized by the persistent margin (replum). All the species of Notospartium are restricted to the northern part of the South Island and N. glabrescens is apparently limited to the valley of the Clarence River and its tributaries. Closely allied to N. Carmichaeliae, it is most easily dis- tinguished in the fruiting condition when its larger and fatter pods make confusion impossible. In the flowering stage.
