Botanical Description

Nomocharis is particularly difficult because the plants exhibit so wide a range of variation in height of stem, size and shape of leaves and in the size of the flowers. These features as Evans has suggested (l.c.) depend directly upon the size and age of the bulb and the conditions under which it has grown. For example, in the present species young and small bulbs produce stems only 18 cm. high with leaves 2-3 cm. long by 6-14 mm. wide and a single flower 5 cm. across, whereas older strong bulbs have stems 80 cm. high with leaves 6.5-10 cm. long by 1-1.7 cm. wide and two flowers 8-10 cm. across; between these two extremes all intermediate stages may be found. A similar state of affairs exists in N. saluenensis (Bot. Mag. t. 9296), which is the nearest ally of N. aperta, and characters based on vegetative *In the catalogue of specimens collected by Forrest, Notes Roy. Bot. Gard. Edinb. XIV., the name " omocharis aperta, W. W. Sm. et W. . Evans, var. Forrestii W. W. Sm. et W. E. Evans," is recorded for Forrest 19551 (p. 96) and Forrest 20499 (p. 176). This work appeared (fide Evans, ibid. XV. 30) in February, 1925, and therefore antedates E. H. Wilson's book which was published on March 31st, 1925. Unfortunately, however, there is nothing to show that the name Nomocharis aperta W. W. Sm. & W. E. Evans was a new combination based on Lilium apertum of Franchet, and the combination has therefore to be attributed to Wilson who definitely proposed it for Franchet's species. This is the part for November, 1924, but W. E. Evans gives the date of publica- tion as February, 1925.
