Botanical Description
For some time the plant figured was thought to be C. salmonicolor Reichb. f., which by many authors has been considered as merely a form of C. speciosa. Dr. J. J. Smith has recently shown, however, that C. salmonicolor is a distinct species, differing in the constantly smaller flowers (sepals about 3-3.5 cm. long), and differently shaped lip, the middle lobe of which is much narrower than in C. speciosa. C. sal- monicolor is restricted to Sumatra, whereas C. speciosa is found throughout western Malaya. C. speciosa var. alba was first recorded in 1905 when a plant was exhibited by Messrs. Sander at a meeting of the Royal Horticultural Society and there received an Award of Merit. Unfortunately nothing definite is known as to its origin, but it may be assumed that it comes from the same region as the type form. The variety flowers at any time between December and August, but usually during the first three months of the year; although, as in C. speciosa, only one flower opens at a time on any given inflorescence, there may be several flowers open together on quite a small plant. Our plant flourishes in a warm orchid house, at a tempera- ture of 65 degrees-70 degrees F. in a compost comprising equal parts of.
