Jasminum polyanthum
Family: Oleaceae • Native Region: China • Publication Date: January 1st, 1934
Distribution: -China; Yunnan, • Tab Author: J. R. SEALY
Botanical Description
The plant is widespread and apparently common, growing in woods and scrub. The occurrence of J. polyanthum at moderate altitudes in China and its absence from the higher mountains of Yunnan, suggest that it will not be hardy in this country except in the milder districts of the south and west, and that elsewhere it will need protection if it is to be grown out of doors. It is growing well against a wall of a house in Major Stern's garden at Goring-by-Sea, Sussex. If it could be persuaded to give of its best, J. polyanthum would form a notable addition to the list of decorative climbers for the greenhouse, but unfor- tunately the flowers lose their colour when plants are grown. under glass. Conditions in gardens on the Riviera suit J. polyanthum perfectly, and there it grows vigorously and flowers profusely, amply justifying the epithet polyanthum bestowed on it by Franchet, as can be seen from the small portion of a flowering.
