Specific Character and Synonyms.
BABIANA sulphurea; foliis totis villosis; fcapo affurgenter inclinato his longiore; media spatharium valva duplo longiore; tubo hac breviore; limbo fubregulari, erectlo, patentiffimo; laciniis ovatis oblongis, tubo fubtriplo longioribus; ftaminibus fubadscendentibus. G. BABIANA sulphurea. Notis supra No. 1019. pag. alt. uti et in Annals of Bot. 1. 234. GLADIOLUS fulphureus. Jacq. Coll. 3. 258. Ic. Rar. 2. 239. Vahl Enum. 2. 99. GLADIOLUS plicatus. Bot. Rep. tab. 268. GLADIOLUS pigmaeus. Burm. Flore Cap. 1. ? Houtt. 11. 46. ? Pink. 1. 424. f. 8. ? It is very difficult to define with any precision the specific difference between this and striata; yet we think them distinct species. Besides general appearance, the stamens are here subadscendent, not entirely trifarious, neither is the corolla precisely regular; the segments are also proportionately longer than the tube. A native of the Cape of Good Hope, from whence it was imported some years ago by Messrs. LEE and KENNEDY of Hammersmith. Seems to us intermediate between striata and plicata. G.
