Americanis bulbus tunicatus, attenuatim elongatus, cuticulis membranaceis veftitus, fibris de margine basis orbiculatim erumpentibus ut in Hyacintho.

Capenfibus rhizoma in speciebus varium, ratione gemmæ aut larvati bulbilli magnum, undique fibratum. scapi fuc- ceffive plures, in quibufdam pedunculi fiftuloso-cavi, hinc facili gradu apud proximam Gethyllidem transeuntes in tubos corollaceos, cum germen a fummo et pedunculato gradatim per species medias in imum radicale dilabitur.

Folia communiter canaliculata vel exceptione rara cavo-teretia, fubambientia, deorfum complicata vel convoluta.

Corolla coriaceo-tenax, poft anthefin per- ftanter connivens.

Capfula in ferrata verticali-oblonga, trigona, cujus diffluit portio fuperna inftar operculi circumciffe difrupta, dum fcinditur paries la- ciniatim et reflexo-revolvens fenfim dimittit femina; ea numerosa, biferialia, fcabrata, nigricanta, libera, receptaculo quoque libero, centrali, triquetro circumsunduntur.

In fructu nondum plene maturato adsunt deffepimenta tria tenuiffima, et femina a suniculo umbicali capillaceo detineri videntur.

Leaves radical, from half to near a soot long, long-fubulate, smooth, channelled, carinate, traverfed at the bottom of the channel by a filvery waved or. rugofecftripe refembling that in the leaves of Crocus, edged ferrulately by minute diftant cartilaginous prickle-like teeth which point downwards. scapes several in fucceffion, flat, in general shorter than their peduncle, which is solitary, one- flowered, roundish, fiftular, supported by two fmallifh fub- ulate oppofite bracts springing from the joint that unites it to its fcape, and after fructification has taken place are refractedly recumbent.

Flowers ftellate, yellow within, green outwards, fcentless.

Petals linear-oblong, acute, flat, twice longer than the germen, three outer ones broader, longer, fubmucronate, and more deflected.

Parts of fructification far shorter than the corolla, deep yellow, nearly equal; anthers three times longer than the filaments; ftyle round, thickifh, three times shorter than the stigmas, which are cufpidate or fubfagittate, pubefcent, and obconically divergent.

Varies with tawny- coloured corollas. y dine Brought into Kew-Gardens from the Cape, by Mr.

MAsSON, in 1788; but we have never yet met with it in any other collection than that at the Nursery of Meffrs.

GRIMWOOD and WYKES, who imported it this Summer from the Cape.

Blooms about July. lowes fac nimi Of easy culture, requiring protection from frost, but no artificial heat, a fmall pot of light fandy peat earth, and to be kept dry while in a quiefcent state.
