Although this is certainly the villofa of the Hortus Kew enfis yet as three distinct species were comprehended by Thunberg in his Fabricia villofa adopted by the authors of that work as the synonym of their plant all which have since since been separately described and figured under their proper names by Jacquin in Plant rar Icon we adopt his titles sor Thunberg'S second and third varieties referving the original one of villofa sor the first as Jacquin has also done but without having been aware that his obliqua and sobolifera had been included by Thunberg in it this we do both with a view to prevent any confufion from not conforming to names made more generally known by such plates as Jacquin'S as also to atwoid introducing a new specific appellation unne ceffarily Root consisting of several bulb-bearing flefhy rootftocks not annually reproduced about the bignefs of walnuts convex above growing together below as they are produced into a thick flattifh solid knobbed irregular mafs from which the herb springs tuftwife Leaves radical from six to eight inches long half an inch broad at the base broad-subulate channelled carinate fhaggily villous receiving a greyish ap pearance from the villi which are thick longifh and soft scapes several in succession strict flat hirsute about the length of the leaves terminated by a 4-6 or more flowered bractteate diftich subfastigiate raceme of one-flowered pe duncles Flowers bright-yellow scentless upright Petals lan ceolate hairy outwards and subherbaceous inner ones rather narrower and less pubescent Filaments subulate concrete at their bases with the glandular tumid base of the style that covers the germen anthers ovate-sagittate upright not so long in proportion as in ferrata and ftellata but coming nearer to those of erecta stigma ovate-oblong three-lobedly-trigonal lobes decurrent slightly prominent channelled with pubescent edges about the length of the style which is round and thickifh Flowers during most part of the Summer of as easy culture as ferrata which fee propagated by dividing its rootstocks with a knife and need not be shifted sor several years not indeed till it has filled the veffel in which it may be not uncommon we never saw it seed introduced into Kew Gardens by Mr MAsSON in 1774 from the Cape 217 Our drawing was taken at Meffrs Grimwoods and Wykes'S Nurfery at Kensington G
