Sebleription Library No N°806 syd Edwards del Pub by TCurtis st Geo Crefcent Jan.1.1806 Tulbagia Alliacea NARCIsSUS-Leaved Tulbagia 10 Class and Order HEXANDRIA MONOGYNIA Generic Character Cor insundibuliformis limbo 3 faucem coronantes stam 3 in fauce 3 intra tubum stigma turbinatum Capf fubtrigonum Ju Gen 54 specific Character and synonyms Tulbagia alliacea collo in coronam corollaceam fexfidam laciniis extimis producto G Tulbagia alliacea Linn Suppl 193 Hort Kew 1 p 408 Thunb prod 60 Willd sp Pl 2 33 Tulbagia capenfis Mant 223 Jacq Hort Vindb 2 p 52 t 115 This singular plant which according to Jacquin unites the habit of Allium with corolla of Hyacinthus and the toothed corollet of Silene is not uncommon in low fandy spots near the town at the Cape of Good Hope where it flowers about July is called by the colonifts wilde knoplook i e wild Garlic and ufed by them when ftewed in milk sor disorders of the breaft Rootstock soboliferous fubbulbicipitous in form substance and colour not unlike a turnip-radifh throwing out from its base a circle of fleshy fibres and from the centre of its depref fed summit a fascicle of numerous diftich leaves which are lorate linear channelled obtuse glaucous towards their base con duplicate and fubbulbiform in the manner of a small leek from the midst of these iffues its roundish upright scape to the height of about two feet terminating in a loose umbel furrounded by by a scariose bivalved intwolucre far shorter than the lax fili form peduncles the ungues of the green calyx-like hypocra teriform corolla grow together into a tube about the length of the patent and on the orifice of this stands an acutely fexfid corolla-like upright fleshy crown of a purplish brown colour and equal in length to the outer segments stamens adnate to the tube three alternate ones shorter and entirely within the tube while the anthers of the others juft appear above its faux Piftil far shorter than tube style thickifh fubtrigonal stigma a flattish or depreffed termination of this Flowers especially in the evening have a sweet but difagreeable odour and the whole plant when touched or wounded exhales a rank fmell of garlic Our drawing was taken in November at Mr Malcolm'S Nursery at Kensington Introduced into Kew Gardens by Mr MAsSON in 1774 G
