Original antique black-and-white print from Curtis's Botanical Magazine — Plate 8871.

A compact Chinese rhododendron named for Charles Sprague Sargent, the founding director of the Arnold Arboretum in Boston — one of the most important botanical institutions in American history, which sent Ernest Wilson to China to collect specimens that transformed American gardens. This small-leafed, white-flowered species is one of the most refined of all rhododendrons.

Official flower: Washington State Flower ; West Virginia State Flower (rhododendron family). Washington State Flower 🌸 — any customer from WA will connect.

Uncolored plate. Condition consistent with age of volume. Each print is a unique piece of botanical history, printed on paper aged over a century.

This plate originated with the Royal Horticultural Society and passed through Wheldon & Wesley, one of the great natural history dealers of the 20th century. We came into the archive by accident and have spent the time since trying to share it as widely as we can.
