Original antique black-and-white print from Curtis's Botanical Magazine — Plate 7345.
A beautiful, slender-trunked Australian palm (elegans = elegant) that grows as a single trunk without clustering — hence 'solitaire.' Native to tropical Queensland and now widely planted across Florida, Hawaii, and the Gulf Coast. The genus name means 'folded seed.' A graceful landscape palm that brings instant tropical ambience to any warm garden — one of the most elegant of all palm species.
Florida, Hawaii, Gulf Coast (TX, LA) — a popular landscape palm across the warm South.
Uncolored plate. Condition consistent with age of volume. Each print is a unique piece of botanical history, printed on paper aged over a century.
This plate originated with the Royal Horticultural Society and passed through Wheldon & Wesley, one of the great natural history dealers of the 20th century. We came into the archive by accident and have spent the time since trying to share it as widely as we can.
